Quick answer
- CommBank waives eligible digital foreign currency transfer fees, as published on 30 October 2026.
- The ACCC says retail exchange rates include a margin, which a fee waiver doesn't remove.
- The recipient's bank charges are outside CommBank's correspondent fee coverage, as published on 30 October 2026.
CommBank charges nothing to send money overseas from NetBank or the app, as long as the money is converted into a foreign currency. Send Australian dollars instead, or go into a branch, and there's a fee. This page sets out CommBank's published charges for sending, changing and receiving international transfers. Fees were checked on CommBank's own pages on 30 October 2026.

CommBank's sending fees
Sending fees in Australian dollars, as published by CommBank on 30 October 2026 on its fees and charges page. These are personal customer fees except for the CommBiz business entry.
| Sending method and currency | Transfer fee |
|---|---|
| NetBank or CommBank app, AUD converted to foreign currency, or sending from a Foreign Currency Account | Waived |
| NetBank or CommBank app, AUD to AUD without conversion | $30 per transfer |
| Branch or manual instruction | $30 per transfer |
| CommBiz business service, AUD to AUD | Waived |
The table covers CommBank's transfer fee only. Our explanation of international money transfer pricing sets out how those parts fit together.
The fee waiver and what it covers
As published by CommBank on 30 October 2026, the transfer fee waiver applies to eligible foreign currency transfers through NetBank or the CommBank app, including the Foreign Currency Account sending option listed above.
CommBank also absorbs correspondent bank fees for cross-currency transfers sent through NetBank, the app or a branch, as published by CommBank on 30 October 2026. Correspondent banks are the banks that pass a payment along between CommBank and the recipient's bank. Banks use SWIFT to send money to banks overseas, according to Moneysmart.
The payee's own bank fees aren't covered by that arrangement, and overseas bank charges may apply, as published by CommBank on 30 October 2026.
See SWIFT, correspondent and receiving bank fees for an explanation of those different roles.
Other CommBank charges
If a payment needs to be stopped, changed or tracked down after it's sent, CommBank charges separately. Request and investigation fees in Australian dollars, as published by CommBank on 30 October 2026 on its fees and charges page.
| Request | Published charge |
|---|---|
| Cancellation or return | $25 per request, plus the overseas bank's costs |
| Amendment | $25, plus the overseas bank's costs |
| Trace | $25 per investigation |
The overseas bank's costs are added to cancellations and amendments, but not to traces, in CommBank's published schedule.
Receiving money into CommBank
For money received into a CommBank AUD account or Foreign Currency Account, CommBank publishes a charge of up to $11 per transfer, depending on arrangements with overseas banks, as published by CommBank on 30 October 2026.
"Up to" means $11 is the most CommBank charges, not a fixed fee on every incoming payment. The sender's bank, and any bank in between, may also take fees before the money arrives.
The exchange rate part
A waived transfer fee doesn't cover the cost of conversion. The ACCC's foreign currency guidance explains that suppliers' retail exchange rates include a margin or mark-up, and may differ from rates reported in the news. CommBank's fee pages don't publish a margin figure.
Our exchange rate margin explanation describes how this works. The mid-market rate is the midpoint between buying and selling prices in the wholesale currency market.
CommBank's site links to a foreign exchange calculator. We don't reproduce exchange rates here, because they change through the day.
Moneysmart includes the exchange rate, conversion margin, transfer charges and receiver fees among the things to compare. The ACCC also identifies the total price and recipient amount as useful measures when comparing transfers.
Where CommBank lists its fees
CommBank's fees and charges page lists its international transfer charges. Its International Money Transfer page provides information about sending money overseas.
There is also a printed standard fees leaflet (PDF), dated 23 July 2026. We checked the fee page against it on 30 October 2026.
What this means for you
On CommBank's published schedule, the sending fee comes down to two things: whether the money is converted, and whether it's sent online. The exchange rate is the part a fee table doesn't show, and it only appears on the quote at the time you send. Charges by the recipient's own bank sit outside CommBank's correspondent fee cover.
